Many dog owners love giving their pups scraps from the table, but it's important to know exactly which human foods can be toxic to dogs and why keeping them out of your pooch's reach is important. Today, our Corpus Christi vets share a comprehensive list of foods and treats that are poisonous to dogs.
Responsible pet parents do everything they can to ensure their dog's health and well-being. One critical aspect of care is providing a safe, nutritious diet. Unfortunately, dogs cannot eat certain types of food because they contain toxic and harmful ingredients that if ingested, can lead to signs of illness like diarrhea, vomiting, and intestinal blockages that require emergency veterinary care and may even be life-threatening.
Below is a list of common household foods that are toxic to dogs.
1. Products That Contain Xylitol
The artificial sweetener xylitol is commonly found in sugar-free gum, baked goods, candy, and some brands of peanut butter. It is highly toxic to dogs and can cause a sudden release of insulin, leading to a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Xylitol ingestion can lead to symptoms such as loss of coordination, vomiting, liver failure, and seizures. Always check ingredient labels carefully and keep products that contain xylitol out of your dog's reach.
2. Chocolate & Caffeine
Chocolate and products that contain caffeine like energy drinks and coffee grounds should never be given to dogs. These contain methylxanthines, which can cause symptoms ranging from increased heart rate and agitation to seizures and even death.
3. Grapes & Raisins
Though grapes and raisins may seem harmless, they can lead to kidney failure in dogs. Even a small amount can cause your pup to become severely ill, so it's critical to keep these away from your canine companion.
4. Onions & Garlic
Garlic and onions, whether cooked, raw, or powdered, can damage a dog's red blood cell production and potentially lead to anemia. It's best to avoid feeding them any food that contains these ingredients, including certain sauces and seasonings.
5. Avocado
While avocados are a healthy fat that offer numerous many health benefits for people, they can be toxic to dogs. Persin is an ingredient in avocados that can damage your dog's gastrointestinal tract. It can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and pancreatitis in canines.
6. Corn on the Cob
Dogs can typically ingest corn kernels themselves safely. However, the cob (or pieces of it), are very difficult for your dog to pass through their system. Ingesting cob may lead to physical blockages and even tearing of the stomach lining.
7. Alcohol
Even in small doses, alcohol can greatly impact your dog's health. The components of alcohol can cause illness and diarrhea in dogs, along with damage to their central nervous system. So, make sure you aren't giving your pooch a piece of your steak if you marinated it in red wine.
What else should I avoid feeding my dog?
When it comes down to it, the best way to ensure you aren't feeding your pooch something toxic is to ask your veterinarian. Your dog's age, breed, and size can also impact which foods are okay to feed them and which ones aren't.
Remember, it never hurts to ask, and it's better not to give your dog a treat from your plate until you're absolutely certain it is safe to do so.
